Helsinki Summer School in Transportation 2012

Concepts and Practices about Sustainability in Transportation
Executive Course
August 13–17, 2012

Introduction

The Helsinki Summer School in Transportation has established itself as a premier institution offering innovative and practical approaches to understand and solve complex transport problems. The Summer School presents an intensive learning experience to transport professionals and graduate students of varying backgrounds. Following the very successful Summer Schools in past five years, the 2012 theme will be Concepts and Practices about Sustainability in Transportation. This theme continues the Summer School's philosophy that transportation decisions encompass a much wider scope than movement of persons and goods, and aim to enhance the economic, intellectual, and social wellbeing of citizens. The pursuit of these "good things" is the meaning of sustainability, carefully examined in the presence of "bad things" and uncertainty about both. The week-long Summer School on Concepts and Practices about Sustainability in Transportation will be a unique experience in which both the real world issues and the analytical approaches will be presented by internationally renowned experts.

The Summer School 2012 will take place in August 13-17, 2012 on the beautiful campus of Aalto University Otaniemi in Espoo, Finland. The five-day course will bring transport executives, managers and graduate students together to analyze and discuss issues in Sustainability in Transport. A site visit is planned to the Helsinki Metro construction site. The class includes two team exercises to apply the concepts and approaches in real world transport planning situations.
